CrossRoads Community Garden Update

August 15, 2011

So much has been happening! First of all we have a new name. We are now calling ourselves the CrossRoads Community Garden. It ties in beautifully with our location on Johnson Ferry and Post Oak Tritt Roads.

This summer the gardeners and bees have been hard at work.  A variety of green, healthy plants have yielded fresh vegetables such as cucumbers, squash, cantaloupe, watermelon, corn, green and red peppers, chard, peas, tomatoes, egg plant, okra and green beans. Thanks to the garden community, many pounds have been donated to MUST Ministries, the Center for Family Resources, needy families at Transfiguration Church/St. Vincent DePaul, and the Marietta First Christian Church.

On June 25th at 8:00 a.m. we had our first workday and what a success!  Fourteen gardeners and friends helped to clean up and beautify the entire garden area. Along with all the enthusiasm and effort we had fun getting to know each other and visiting each other’s gardens.

Gardeners have taken advantage of several learning opportunities. June 25, we had our first garden class. Susan Beasley from Pike’s Nursery presented a class entitled: Perennial and Vegetable Garden Pest Management to 24 participants. She shared quite a bit of information in addition to giving us things to think about for our next planting season. On July 19, about 22 people came out to hear Jane Reeves, from the Cobb County Extension, present: Preservation of Your Vegetables; From Canning to Salsa. A lucky attendee received a book on canning and preserving as a door prize. August 10, found some of us attending a workshop at Mt.View Library to hear the presentation: Fall Vegetable Gardening.

Good things are continuing to happen! We’re excited that this weekend, Eagle Scout, Joe MacMillan, will begin his project of building additional garden beds (to be used in the spring), a compost area, a tool shed area, and benches. The men of the church have put in a sprinkling system for the Feed the Hungry Garden that has made the watering process easier and so much more efficient. Our request for a grant from the Master Gardeners was accepted for the year 2012 and we have been designated as a feature project on the Master Gardener Tour next year in May.

Throughout the past two months, a number of gardeners have made new acquaintances as they shared gardening challenges (munching critters) and compared successes (beautiful and delicious vegetables). In spite of the rabbits, squirrels, crows, deer, those pesky insects and the heat we’ve produced pounds of produce to enjoy and share with others.

In the Spring of 2009, members of Chestnut Ridge Christian Church decided to set aside space on an unused portion of their property for a “Square-Foot Garden” to grow fresh, organic vegetables to provide local food pantries and people in need. It was hoped that this produce would assist those who were going through the challenging times of a weak economy, and provide some healthy alternative foods. Three boxes were constructed, dirt was mixed, and vegetables were planted.

The garden was expanded in 2010, and over 150 pounds of fresh produce was provided to The Center for Family Resources, Marietta First Christian Church Food Pantry, The Extension for Women, and MUST ministries. Members of CRCC maintained the garden, and experienced a sense of community and fellowship

Personal Plots
In 2011, the Garden is expanding even further not only in size, but also in purpose. While maintaining the church’s plots for local pantries, plots will now be available for individuals from our local community at a nominal fee to plant, maintain and harvest for their own personal use. It is hoped that this will help meet a growing need for space in the suburbs of Metro Atlanta for safe, fresh, home-grown produce and also build a sense of community among those who participate.

Classes and Workshops
As the Garden grows, it is envisioned that the Garden will be used by a number of local gardening organizations, Scout Troops, Cobb County’s Wright Nature Center, and other groups as a site for training and demonstrations on various gardening methods and topics. Partnering with these organizations will hopefully expand interest in gardening and spread the healthy value of locally grown produce as a key part of a healthy diet.
